Stop Bullying Now: Take A Stand! Lend A Hand!
Do you know a bully? Is it the boy that lives down the street that takes your lunch money? Is it the girl that sits next to you in math class that makes fun of your hairstyle? Let's face it, everyone knows a bully. But do you know exactly what a bully is? A bully is someone that says or does something in a way that hurts someone else or makes him or her feel bad on purpose. According to bullingstastistics.com, over 77% of kids are bullied sometime in their life. There are five main types of bullying: verbal, physical, social, extortion, and cyber bullying. Verbal bullying includes name-calling. Physical bullying includes hitting, kicking, or punching someone, or any other form of physical violence. Social bullying is when someone is left out of a group or activity on purpose. Extortion is taking someone else's money or things. The last main group of bullying is cyber bullying, which means that someone is being bullied through internet, cell phones, blogs, etc. Bullying can keep you from enjoying life and other activities that you once enjoyed, but it doesn't have to!
Having first-hand experience with the issue of bullying, I know the toll it can take on a person. Growing up in a small school, everybody knows everybody else's business. Rumors spread like wildfire and feelings get hurt easily. I would get called names such as weirdo, freak, and other much crueler names. I would get pushed to ground and kicked in the stomach. I was treated as though I wasn't worth anything and no matter how much my family told me that I was good enough, I didn't feel as though I was worth anything. I went into a state of depression, becoming so miserable that I wanted to take my own life. I hit my all-time low because I was bullied so much in school. My home life was great, my grades were great, but I was the core of many jokes. I didn't know how to deal with my life or myself. I eventually came to the conclusion that I needed help. I was tired of feeling so miserable, so alone. I saw a counselor and was finally on the track to happiness. I was finally dealing with my problems, and realizing that I am worth it. I am the person that I always wanted to be, I just had to play my own song rather than listening to the lies told about me. I am now a happier, healthier person. I want to reach out to others who have been bullied and help prevent future bullying from occurring.
Bullying is definitely a serious issue. I bet most people don't know the toll being bullied can take on a person. Just from being bullied, many kids will become depressed and suicidal. Also, kids that are bullied are more likely to skip or drop out of school. The kids that do the bullying are more likely to get into fights and vandalize property. According to the Olweus Bullying Prevention program, 60% of kids who bullied in school have at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24! So how can we solve bullying? It takes everyone, but we can start by standing up for someone that we see being bullied. If we're not comfortable standing up for the victim, tell an adult immediately. The only way we can solve this ongoing problem is by making everyone aware that bullying is everywhere and that it can happen to anyone. Help put an end to this problem by simply standing up against bullying.
With being on student council, I am currently making my school aware of the issue of bullying. Starting with a small group, we are teaming together to make the rest of Crestview Schools aware of the bullying problem. I have also made a children's book that focuses on the issue of bullying and how we can help put an end to it. I plan to read this book to the students at Crestview Elementary School and eventually other elementary school aged students. I will teach the children at their young age how wrong bullying is and what they can do to help so that it doesn't become an even more serious problem for their generation. Also, I will be making a brochure explaining the causes, effects, and reasons of bullying to give to the community adult members. By making both the adults and children aware of this growing problem, we can put an end to bullying. Stop Bullying Now: Take A Stand! Lend A Hand!
